Banteay Srei, meaning “Citadel of the Women,” is one of Cambodia’s most beautifully decorated ancient temples. Built in 967 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, the temple was dedicated to Shiva and is renowned for its exceptional craftsmanship. Unlike the massive temples of Angkor, Banteay Srei is relatively small, but its intricate details make it a true masterpiece of Khmer art.
The temple is famous for its warm pink and reddish sandstone, which creates a distinctive appearance, especially in the soft morning or late-afternoon sunlight. The stone was carefully carved into extraordinarily detailed devatas, apsaras, guardian figures, floral patterns, and scenes from Hindu mythology.

Pre Rup is a magnificent 10th-century temple located on the Grand Circuit of Angkor, built around 961 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II. The name “Pre Rup” is commonly interpreted as “turning the body,” and the temple is traditionally associated with ancient Khmer cremation rituals.
Constructed mainly from brick, laterite, and sandstone, Pre Rup is a striking example of Angkorian architecture. Its impressive three-tiered pyramid rises above the surrounding landscape and is crowned by five sanctuary towers arranged in a quincunx pattern, symbolizing Mount Meru, the sacred center of Hindu cosmology.
The temple was dedicated primarily to Shiva, with beautifully carved lintels, false doors, guardian figures, and architectural details reflecting the artistic development of the period. The upper levels provide excellent views of the surrounding countryside and rice fields.

Neak Pean, meaning “Entwined Serpents,” is a unique Buddhist temple located on a circular island in the center of an ancient reservoir called Jayatataka, part of the Grand Circuit of Angkor. It was built in the late 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII and was originally designed as a place of healing and purification.
The temple’s central sanctuary rises from a circular island surrounded by water, with four smaller pools representing the four great directions. According to ancient beliefs, the sacred waters were thought to have healing powers. At the center, two intertwined naga serpents symbolize protection and balance.
Neak Pean is especially beautiful during the rainy season, when the surrounding pools and vegetation create a peaceful atmosphere. Visitors reach the temple by walking along a long wooden causeway across the reservoir, offering scenic views and excellent photography opportunities.
East Mebon is an impressive 10th-century Hindu temple located on the Grand Circuit of Angkor. Built around 952 AD during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, it was dedicated to Shiva and served as the temple of the ancient East Baray reservoir.
The temple stands on a raised platform and was originally surrounded by water, creating the appearance of an island sanctuary. Its three levels are constructed mainly from laterite and brick, with sandstone used for important architectural details. One of its most famous features is the magnificent stone elephant sculptures positioned at the corners of the lower platform. These elephants appear to guard the temple and are among its most memorable decorations.
The upper level features five brick towers arranged in a quincunx, symbolizing Mount Meru, the sacred center of Hindu cosmology. East Mebon offers visitors a fascinating combination of history, architecture, sculpture, and ancient Khmer religious symbolism.
Ta Som is a charming late-12th-century Buddhist temple located on the Grand Circuit of Angkor. It was built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII and is believed to have been dedicated to his father, Dharanindravarman II. The temple reflects the distinctive architectural style of Jayavarman VII’s reign, with galleries, towers, intricate carvings, and Buddhist imagery.
Ta Som is relatively small compared with nearby Angkor temples, but its peaceful atmosphere and jungle setting make it especially attractive. The temple’s most famous feature is the eastern outer gate, where a large strangler fig tree has grown over the ancient stone structure. The combination of massive roots and weathered sandstone creates a dramatic and photogenic scene.

Preah Khan, meaning “Sacred Sword,” is one of the most impressive temples on the Grand Circuit of Angkor. It was built in the late 12th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, around 1191 AD, and was dedicated to his father, King Dharanindravarman II.
The temple served not only as a religious sanctuary but also as an important royal city, educational center, and Buddhist monastery. Preah Khan combines Buddhist and Hindu religious elements, reflecting the changing religious traditions of the Khmer Empire.
