Ancient Angkor with Gem Temples & Beng Mealea and Koh ker Temple

Ancient Angkor with Gem Temples & Beng Mealea and Koh ker Temple

Day 1: Beng Mealea and Koh Ker are two of Cambodia’s most spectacular ancient Khmer temple sites outside the main Angkor Archaeological Park. They are often visited together on a full-day trip from Siem Reap because they lie along the same route.

Beng Mealea Temple

Beng Mealea was constructed during the height of the Khmer Empire. Archaeologists believe it may have served as an important religious center on the ancient Royal Road linking Angkor to Preah Khan of Kampong Svay. Although smaller than Angkor Wat, it is one of the empire’s largest temples.

It is also the one of Cambodia’s most atmospheric ancient temples, often called the “Lost Jungle Temple.” Unlike many temples in the Angkor region, it has been left largely unrestored, allowing visitors to experience the site much as early explorers did. Massive trees, creeping vines, and moss-covered sandstone blocks have become part of the monument, creating a remarkable blend of nature and history.

Koh Ker TempleĀ

Unlike Angkor, Koh Ker served as the capital of the Khmer Empire for only about 20 years. During this short period, King Jayavarman IV commissioned more than 180 temples, making it one of Cambodia’s most important archaeological landscapes. Koh Ker was a major center for worship of Shiva. Ancient inscriptions describe enormous lingas that symbolized royal authority and divine power. The Koh Ker archaeological site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, recognizing its outstanding importance as a former Khmer imperial capital.

Day2:

Angkor Wat

Ta Prohm Temple
